I received honors at the Hyderabad Chapter of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India's Golden Jubilee. A wave of emotions swept over me during my felicitation as I adorned myself with a turban, a handcrafted memento featuring my name and the 50th anniversary, and a traditional shawl. These thoughtful gestures reflected the respect and appreciation I've garnered over my 40-year career as a company secretary. The celebration marked the closing moments in a historic building, an excursion to the sprawling Rashtrapati Nilayam in Secunderabad, and a celebration of the enduring bonds with professional colleagues, students, and staff. Continue reading to discover how the background shapes this reflection on the past and future.
A Golden Jubilee and a Fond Farewell
As the sun began to rise on August 10, 2024, a unique blend of nostalgia and anticipation enveloped the historic building of the Hyderabad Chapter of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) in Anand Nagar, Khairatabad.
This was no ordinary day; it marked the culmination of a fortnight-long celebration commemorating the chapterโs golden jubilee. For me personally, it was a bittersweet moment, tinged with both joy and melancholy (wrapped up in sorrowful thoughts).
A special building
I have been deeply involved in the chapter's journey for over three decades, and this building holds a special place in my heart. As a former chairman (1996) and a dedicated faculty member since 1991, I've witnessed its transformation, its challenges, and its triumphs. As a senior faculty member, I imparted knowledge on company law to countless aspiring company secretaries within these walls, shaping future corporate leaders.
However, the passage of time had taken its toll on the building. Time had compromised its structural integrity, requiring a rebuild. Literally, a new chapter was about to begin. The ICSI Central Council, New Delhi, had approved the demolition of this historic structure and granted permission for a modern, five-story building in its place. While progress is inevitable, a part of me mourns the loss of this familiar space.
A final get-together
As we gathered for a final get-together, I couldnโt help but feel a surge of emotions. It was a chance to reunite with colleagues, mentors, and students who have been instrumental in the chapterโs growth. We shared laughter, reminisced about shared experiences, and expressed gratitude for the journey we had embarked on together.
This event was more than just a celebration; it was a heartfelt tribute to the institution that has nurtured countless professionals. As I stood amidst familiar faces, I couldnโt help but reflect on my own journey. From being an active member of the Managing Committee for eight years to the privilege of serving as Chairman, my association with the Hyderabad Chapter has been a defining chapter in my life.
Timeless Guru-Shishya Bond: A Golden Reunion
A heartwarming reunion unfolded on this eve, in the very same room where our journey began at the heritage building of Hyderabad Chapter of ICSI.
In the 1990s, we met as teacher and student, and today, we reconnected as friends. I'm thrilled to see my former student, CS Raghu Babu, flourish as an accomplished Company Secretary and successful SimplyBiz ( https://simplybiz.in/ ) entrepreneur. Grateful to Raghu Babu's wife for capturing this joyful moment. Our bond, forged through learning and mentorship, stands the test of time.
A Fortnight of Celebration
The Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Hyderabad Chapter of ICSI were a grand affair, spanning a fortnight from August 1st to 15th, 2024. A get-together cum photoshoot captured the essence of camaraderie and shared history among the members. The esteemed CS Manoj Koyalkar delivered a thought-provoking seminar on "CSRO (Company Auditor's Report Order) vs. Companies Act" in another venue. I could attend it partially.
A Moment of Recognition
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the felicitation bestowed upon me along with other former leaders like me. As I stood before the gathering, a wave of emotions washed over me. It was a moment of profound gratitude for the opportunities and support I had received throughout my career. Sharing the movements with colleagues, friends, and mentees was a humbling experience.ย
An applause and thoughtful tribute with a turban reflected all the respect and appreciation I've received throughout the years. The headgear known as a turban is made by wrapping fabric. I felt as if I had won a crown. In addition to this honor, I received a stunning handcrafted memento featuring my name and the 50th anniversary, along with a traditional shawl encircling me.
Distinguished Presence and Inspirational Insights
Eminent personalities graced the evening with their words that left a lasting impact. Shri Jeevan Lal Lavidiya, IRS Commissioner of Income Tax, Telangana State, delivered a compelling speech that resonated with the audience. His insights into the intersection of taxation and corporate governance provided valuable perspectives.
Another distinguished guest, Shri RP Parnaik, a renowned filmmaker, composer, singer, writer, and actor, offered a unique perspective on life and its celebrations. His emphasis on the power of music as a source of joy and inspiration was truly inspiring. He encouraged the audience to listen to the Sampoorna Bhagavadgita, an 18-verse composition he had created, available on YouTube. This unexpected musical interlude added a touch of spirituality and harmony to the event.
A member of the ICSI Central Council, CS Venkata Ramana, shared exciting news about the beginning of the chapter's building reconstruction. Enthusiastic applause greeted his announcement, reflecting the shared vision of a modern and functional facility for future generations of company secretaries.
Gratitude and appreciation
The Golden Jubilee celebrations' success was a collective effort. The unwavering dedication of CS Srilakshmi Narayana Gupta G, the current Chairperson, was instrumental in bringing the event to fruition. The contributions of CS Manjeeth Bucha, CS Lalitha Kumari T, CS Karthik A, and CS Pavan Kankani complemented his leadership and vision. The secretary, Ms. CS Shilpa Bung, orchestrated the event with meticulous precision, ensuring that every moment unfolded seamlessly. CS Mahadev T, Secretary of the ICSI Southern India Regional Council, known for his novel ideas, did his best this time too.
The support of the Hyderabad Chapter staff, including Mr. Srinivas, Mr. Praveen, and Mr. Srikanth, was invaluable. Their hard work and dedication behind the scenes ensured that the event ran smoothly.
Rashtrapati Nilayam is a royal retreat.
To add an extra touch of grandeur to the Golden Jubilee celebrations, the group embarked on an enriching excursion to the sprawling Rashtrapati Nilayam in Secunderabad. This majestic presidential retreat, with its lush gardens, historical significance, and architectural marvels, provided a fitting backdrop for a day of exploration and camaraderie.
Opened to the public in March 2023, Rashtrapati Nilayam offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience the grandeur of presidential life. The Knowledge Gallery, a treasure trove of information about Rashtrapati Bhavan and its estates, captivated our attention with its displays of historical artifacts, including personal belongings of past Presidents of India and stories of unsung heroes.
The iconic 120-foot-tall teak wood flagpost, a replica of the original one where the Indian flag was first hoisted in Hyderabad, stood as a symbol of the city's rich history. The recently revived stepwells, including the Jai Hind Stepwell, showcased the past's architectural brilliance and water management practices.
The restored Kitchen Tunnel, adorned with vibrant Cheriyal art, was a testament to the preservation of cultural heritage. The meticulously landscaped gardens, including the Herbal Garden, Nakshatra Garden, Rock Garden, Maze Garden, Palmatum, and Fruit Orchards, offered a serene escape amidst nature's beauty. The musical fountain is a feast to the eyes and ears.
The insightful photographs captured by my 10-year-old grandson Vivaan, who accompanied me to the Rashtrapati Nilayam, served as a visual chronicle of the event, preserving the cherished memories for posterity.
A Symphony of Culture and Cuisine
The evening concluded with a delightful cultural program featuring a captivating Kuchipudi dance performance by talented young artists. The graceful movements and rhythmic beats transported us to a world of elegance and tradition. A sumptuous high tea, served amidst the elegant surroundings, provided a fitting end to the day.
The Journey Continues
Despite the moderate turnout, the spirit of the event remained undiminished. Recognizing alongside my esteemed colleague, CS Ramachandra Murthy Gollakota, made the occasion even more special for me. As we bid farewell to the 50th Foundation Day Celebration, a sense of fulfillment and anticipation for future milestones filled our hearts. The journey continues, and the future of the Hyderabad Chapter of ICSI promises to be as bright as the legacy we have inherited.
